John R Haeck, CPA
Governance Consultant

John R Haeck, CPA practices public accounting as the president of his own firm, JR Haeck Professional Corporation. He has served as an auditor and not-for-profit tax practitioner for many years and has served on multiple boards of directors. He has transitioned his not-for-profit audit practice to not-for-profit governance consulting, specializing in governance/board training, board meeting and retreat facilitation, strategic and financial planning, internal control development, audit committee setup and function, and finance committee responsibilities.

John offers significant depth and breadth to his professional focus that will translate into rewarding improvements to how not-for-profit organizations govern themselves and more effectively serve their constituencies. John’s background in the not-for-profit arena has involved several types of services, including the following;

Not-for-Profit Financial Statement Audits and Reviews

John audited and reviewed not-for-profit organizations for over 17 years. John served as partner-in-charge of not-for-profit auditing and consulting for a local CPA firm, prior to beginning his own firm in 1993. Audit responsibilities included special district (governmental) clients and small commercial business. Consulting responsibilities included assistance with strategic planning, cash flow projections, and working capital management alternatives.

After establishing his own CPA practice, John continued conducting financial statement audits and reviews of not-for-profit organizations from various sectors. Clients included charitable organizations (IRC Section 501(c)(3)), professional and business associations (IRC Section 501(c)(6)), a labor union (IRC Section 501(c)(5), and a ditch company (IRC Section 501(c)(12).  John no longer offers audit, review and compilation services, preferring instead to focus on consulting and tax compliance.

Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), Chief Information Systems Officer

John spent over 4 years as the chief administrative officer of a not-for-profit organization whose mission involved credentialing and regulating financial planners. Inasmuch as John joined this organization as it began its existence, John helped build it from the ground up. He took full responsibility for establishing and developing an information processing department, accounting and financial reporting department, overseeing all administrative functions, and serving as liaison to the Board of Directors for internal matters. John reported directly to the President, whose complementary duties involved external communications and coordination, as well as reporting to the Board of Directors. However, John communicated directly with key Board members, particularly the Finance Committee Chairman.

Exempt Organization Annual IRS Reporting (Form 990)

John prepared annual Form 990 tax returns for exempt organizations for both audit clients and unaudited organizations for many years. John now instructs other CPAs on the preparation of Form 990, as part of an independently established CPA and attorney continuing education organization.

Instructor for CPE4U Colorado Tax Program

John currently teaches multiple continuing education classes for the CPE4U Colorado organization. Classes include Exempt Organization Annual Reporting to the IRS: Form 990 and Related Schedules, Unrelated Business Taxable Income, Governance Responsibilities in the Not-for-Profit Sector, and Not-for-Profit Audit Committees.

Board Member Experience

John has served as a director or trustee on multiple boards of directors for not-for-profit organizations. Committee assignments included Finance, Program, and Long-Range Planning.  John also served on multiple task forces, including an Audit Committee Task Force and a Strategic Alternatives Task Force. John chaired the Audit Committee Task Force which developed and prepared its recommendations to the board of Christian Living Communities, Inc. regarding the development of an Audit Committee and its charter, separate and apart from the organization’s Finance Committee.

John previously served on the board of Grand Timber Lodge Owners’ Association, as well as Harambee, Inc, an organization dedicated to enhancing the self-sufficiency of less-advantaged people, particularly those living in Kenya and Zimbabwe. John helped guide Harambee’s initial board through the Form 1023 Application process with the IRS and obtaining initial exemption status with the Service.
