Corporate Management

Served as Treasurer and Director of Finance and Administration for the CFP credentialing and regulatory body. Responsibilities included the supervision of all financial and treasury functions, all data processing activities and all internal office administration. Accomplishments included:

  • Financial & Administrative Organization - Developed accounting procedures and controls, staffed the department and supervised the development of all administrative procedures including personnel, receptionist, purchasing, and mail room.
  • Data Processing Organization and Systems Installation - Selected and installed all company data processing systems, staffed the department and installed procedures for routine data entry and computer operations. Provided office wide support of all personal computer operations.
  • Corporate Reorganization - Interviewed staff, reviewed procedures and issued an internal consulting report to the President identifying the need and recommending a plan for reorganization of the company's internal operation. One department was eliminated and the lines of responsibility were clarified to the benefit of all staff. Board and staff relationships and roles were also improved.
  • License and Continuing Education Processing - Planned and implemented first-time systems and procedures for annually licensing and monitoring continuing education compliance for authorized Certified Financial Planner Registrants.
Departmental Management
Served as the Manager, Systems Planning & Development for a major gas pipeline company. Responsibilities included management of all applications systems development and maintenance. Managed a staff of 25 data processing professionals and had full budget and personnel responsibility for this department. Accomplishments include:
  • Product Quality - Improved dependability and quality of system development projects by initiating a new system development methodology. Communications and understanding between users and ISD were markedly strengthened.
  • ISD Responsiveness - Improved ISD responsiveness to corporate business needs by helping initiate and supervising the company's first-ever annual systems planning effort. This helped change the department's mode of operation from crisis driven and reactionary to disciplined and planned.
  • Organization - Clarified departmental responsibilities and user/ISD communication channels by organizing staff along major business unit lines.
  • Training Program - Organized and initiated departmental and user training program to improve user understanding of their role in system development efforts and to maximize the technical skills of the staff.
  • Staff Morale - Improved staff morale by initiating and enforcing regular personnel reviews, instituting an annual professional planning process with each professional and initiating a new employee orientation program.
  • Recruiting - Attracted and assembled one of the most outstanding professional staffs in the city by organizing an applicant selection process that was acclaimed by interviewees as being as thorough and impressive as any that most applicant's had experienced.
Public Accounting/Consulting
Served as partner in charge of auditing and consulting for a local CPA firm. Audit responsibilities were concentrated on not-for-profit, small commercial, and special district (governmental) clients. Consulting responsibilities included working with commercial and not-for-profit clients regarding strategic business planning, and bank loan application assistance, cash flow projections, and working capital management alternatives. Also served as a senior manager, manager and staff consultant for two large public accounting firms. Responsibilities included practice development, client project management and billing. Managed large, multi-million dollar development projects to small, one person consulting engagements. Successfully adapted to unfamiliar technical environments, a diversity of application needs and multiple industries. Experience includes:

Project Leadership
  • Project Manager - Designed major system (software package) to help energy companies report oil and gas production and product disposition from Federal and Indian leases to the Minerals Management Service. Successfully marketed the system to several major energy companies. Coordinated the origination of a user group and chaired the initial meetings.
  • Industry Conversion Planning Manager - Developed the industry conversion plans for the Minerals Management Service to convert the oil and gas and solid minerals industries to new Federal production reporting requirements.
  • Project Manager - Managed a series of projects to stabilize the installation of a Royalty Revenue system for a large crude oil transporter. Coordinated the interface of geographically dispersed marketing, operations and accounting departments. Designed data capture and distribution network accounting cut-off procedures. Reviewed EDP management procedures. Improved crude oil exchange balancing procedures and internal controls.
  • Project Manager - Reviewed and made recommendations on the design of an oil and gas production and well permitting information system for the State of Colorado.
  • Project Manager - Performed requirements definition, request for proposal, and software selection for an accounts payable/purchasing system for a uranium mining company.
  • Project Manager - Performed an EDP feasibility study for four Colorado banks. Evaluated proof operations data capture, and data transmission alternatives. Large and small in-house data processing configurations were compared with the service bureau processing option.
  • Project Manager - Performed a General Ledger preliminary system design for the holding company of a large family of banks in Colorado.
  • Team Leader - Helped design a multi-million dollar system for the Minerals Management Service to track the production of oil and gas and solid minerals from Federal and Indian lands from the well zone and mine to the point of royalty determination. Major responsibilities included project management and technical processing design.
  •  Team Leader - Designed a Retail Marketing Accounting System for a large oil refining company. Reviewed and made recommendations on internal controls. Auditor, Consultant, Analyst and Other Experience
  • Auditor - Served as partner, manager, senior and staff assistant auditor. Participated in all phases of audits, including marketing of new audit work, overall audit supervision, audit planning, field work, report development and client relations.
  • Business Planner - Coordinated the development of and penned many business plans for various small businesses, including those for whom I was employed as well as small business clients.
  • Consultant - Trained a banking service bureau's project team in the operation of a banking general ledger package.

  • Project Consultant - Coordinated system design standards and internal control features with the General Accounting Office (GAO) in a project to develop a system for the Minerals Management Service. This system accounts for the collection and distribution of royalties, rents, and bonuses from Federal and Indian lands.
  • Quality Control Manager/Consultant - Conducted a project management review of a major system development project for a large coal mining company in Canada. Systems included General Ledger, Payroll, Materials Management, and Statistical Analysis.
  • Technical Writer - Participated in the development of user procedures for a family of banks in preparation for the conversion to a new general ledger system.
  • Senior Project Analyst - Participated in a large project to design and install cost accounting, general ledger, and accounts payable systems. Assisted in the redesign of eleven existing systems in order to interface with the new general ledger system.
  • Consultant - Reviewed the data processing department of a major public utility company and made recommendations to management. Areas reviewed included project management practices, hardware acquisition procedures, systems performance, equipment utilization, user relations, and long-range EDP planning.
  • Analyst - Participated in the design and installation of a General Ledger and Responsibility Reporting System for a multi-division international manufacturing company. Concentrated in areas of budgeting, cost accounting, and user controls over the system. Subsequently managed system installation at a major divisional location.
  • Consultant - Performed various financial modeling, budgeting, and forecasting studies, largely in the health care industry.
